Bell XFL-1
"Airabonita"
...
was Bell A/C's bid to develop a naval fighter based on the P-39.... though a beautifull design the transforming of the tricycle geared P-39 to a navalised "tail dragger" was to cause a tricky Center of Gravity problem that was never fully overcome .. In fact leaving the XFL as a Tri gear would have probably solved all its C.G,problems but the navy wasnt buying it OR liquid cooled engines either
Advanced in every way like all of Bells products the XFL had a a much broader wing than the P-39 had revised radiators but retained the centrally mounted engine and eliminated the 37 mm cannon... This kit is of the first modification of the only protoype with the original revolutionary through the wing radiators..
ALSO there is one thing that Planet MISSED,,, The Radio antennea was mounted inside the LEADING EDGE OF THE FIN... which was made of clear Plexiglas... not a difficult modification .
Its interesting that Japanese pilots in WW II derisively knick- named the P-39 Airacobra the "Dried Bonito" based on the fuselage profile... makes you wonder ...
